Small Groups

God is not simply saving individuals, but he is creating a family where relationships deeply matter.  We desire that all people live in an authentic faith community that fosters a vibrant and deepening relationship with God.
One of the primary ways we build relationships and cultivate fellowship with each other here is through a network of small groups While we are joined to all believers in the local church, Small Groups allow us to relate more deeply with a small number of people.

Start a group:  to start a group, contact our Small Group leadership team to learn about Sunset groups and to sign up for an upcoming leader training group.  Then, gather a group of people – family members, friends from Sunset, co-workers, neighbors and get started!  We also provide training for individuals who are willing to meet and shepherd new people who are looking for a group.

Be the Bridge 101 Class

Thursdays on Feb 18, March 4, March 18, April 1, 7-8:30 pm on Zoom

Desire to become a Bridge Builder? Grow deeper in racial understanding in this four-part class.  Join others learning and growing through discussions on race. The class is free but the PDF cost is $10 on the Be The Bridge website. We suggest you attend the Growing in Racial Understanding Class first, which is listed above, but this is not required.

"When it comes to racial bridge-building for white people, Be The Bridge places a lot of the focus on listening to and learning from people of color. But there’s also some important internal work that white people need to do as well. When white people don’t understand some of the basic tenets of whiteness, it’s hard to fully engage in the work of racial reconciliation." - Be The Bridge

Take a look at the Be the Bridge resources to help build racial unity, and register for the four-part class below.

Registration for this class is now closed. There will be another Be the Bridge 101 class in the summer, so please stay on the lookout for details.

Growing in Racial Understanding Class

Sunday, Feb 28, 11:30 am or Sunday, March 28, 11:30 am

Interested in learning how to have a discussion on race? These two classes are an introduction to exploring different perspectives on race. Explore racial identity and how you think about race in a safe environment through videos, photos, personal stories and small group discussions. This is a good first step on a journey to explore how to help heal the wounds of racism. We invite you to join us over Zoom at one of these classes.

Women's Bible STudy

Join Us This Winter at Sunset Women’s Bible Study (Jan 12 – March 16)

The Emotionally Healthy Woman

Join us this winter at Sunset Women’s Bible Study as we continue to develop an emotionally healthy spirituality. This time, we’ll hear from Geri Scazzero as she shares eight unhealthy areas of relating and how she quit them. Sharing from both personal stories and biblical examples, Geri shows us how being afraid of what others think; lying; dying to the wrong things; denying anger, sadness, and fear; blaming; over functioning; faulty thinking; and living someone else’s life keep us from the true peace and freedom of God’s kingdom. In eight challenging lessons, Geri urges us to quit each of these unhealthy habits in favor of God’s ways. What she hopes to demonstrate for us is that when you quit for the right reasons, at the right time, and in the right way, you're on the path not only to emotional health but also to the true, God-given purpose of your life.

Join us as we gather online in small groups to share authentically, support each other faithfully, and urge one another forward in spiritual growth and freedom. During a season where it is easy to become isolated and discouraged, we hope you will join other women as we apply scripture together to our real and messy lives, and help one another to grow more like Christ.

MEN's Ministry

Sunset recognizes that Christian men often have difficulty forming strong relationships with other Christian men. It is evident from the Bible (e.g., Proverbs 27:16-18; Ecclesiastes 4:12), as well as Jesus’ lifestyle, that such interactions are essential. We all can lighten our struggles by sharing with others (Galatians 6:2). Sunset offers a variety of activities for men at all levels of spiritual maturity as well as outreach events for their friends. If you are not connected with other Christian men, try one or more of these groups and find your community at Sunset.

Saturdays from 7 - 8:30 am

7:00 – 7:30 Fellowship

7:30-8:30 Study in the Word and Prayers

Currently meeting on Zoom

(Use contact link to get Zoom info.)

A multi-generational, multi-cultural group of men who meet on Saturdays to connect with fellow followers of Jesus Christ, enjoy great fellowship and a Bible-focused discussion that encourages open sharing among all men to discuss God’s Word and how to apply it in our daily walk with Jesus. We also spend time on individual and corporate prayer requests. The meetings are open to drop in and out because we do a different verse each week versus an extended study topic. Our typical attendance is between 20 - 35 men each week.

Thursday evenings, meeting via Zoom
Our focus is to understand better and apply the Sunday message to our life - this includes Bible study, prayer, fellowship and care for each other. The discussion leadership is rotated between several of the regular attendees. There are currently about ten men regularly attending, but this is an open group, and all men are welcome. This men's group had been meeting for several years and strives to help men continue to grow as followers of Jesus.

Not Currently Meeting
Righteous brothers, men over 60, meet each Wednesday from 10:30 am –12:00. The first half hour is fellowship and from 11:00 am to noon is Bible study. Approximately 8 - 14 men attend. This is a great place for men to connect and form a strong bond with other Christian men.

There are several groups of 5 - 8 men who meet regularly to grow in relationships with other men and God. The fellowship of other Christian men is a gift God wants to place in each man’s life for strength, encouragement, and protection. These groups meet at various locations weekday mornings or evenings.

Half of all men involved in church struggle with sexual purity issues. They fear to share this battle with their church leadership and community and so they live in daily shame, pain, and isolation –letting this addiction destroy their marriage and family. This is too big of a problem to ignore. FMO works with numerous churches and is making a difference. Hundreds of men have experienced change through Jesus' healing power. We meet in highly confidential small groups to encourage each other and to honestly share our struggles.

Sonshine Treasures Ministry

The mission of Sonshine Treasures is to share God's love with people who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and to equip them to become active participants in the Family of God, the church.

Sonshine Treasures is a uniquely designed Sunday School class for individuals with special needs, ages 12 and older.

Sonshine Treasures meets from 11 a.m. to noon every Sunday in the Fellowship Hall of Sunset Presbyterian Church.  Volunteers greet members as they are dropped off by Tri-Met lift buses, group home staff, or parents.

Members who choose to go to the Sanctuary join the Congregation in singing worship and praise songs.  Following this time, class members return to the classroom where they enjoy more singing, celebrate birthdays, have a snack, share prayer requests, and hear Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments.  When the Congregation celebrates Communion our class also participates.

Individuals who are interested in the Sonshine Treasure Ministry, either to volunteer, or for more information about this special ministry, are encouraged to call Jackie Davidson at 503-645-1611.

All women are welcome to this free international dance fitness class that embraces exercise, community and praising Jesus! We start each session with a 15-minute devotional and then our hour-long exercise class (that includes both cardio and toning elements) begins right after that.

Mondays & Thursdays – 6:15 pm - 7:30 pm

Wednesdays – 8:45 am - 10:00 am

(Wednesday's class is a "gentler" version that will focus on slower and lower impact dance moves with high impact options also.)

Come join us if you want a friendly atmosphere where you can work on both your spiritual and physical health. We guarantee you'll leave encouraged and feeling fit! No need to register. All classes are held in the Gym and are FREE! Enter at the East Entry and follow the signs.

Note: schedule is subject to change. To confirm class times for any given week, email Lorraine at lorraineprather@sunsetpres.org.
