Mission Trip Dates

July 6 - 13,  2018

Team Closed

“The Colonia” is a village parallel with the U.S. / Mexican border near McAllen, Texas. Over 500 families have found themselves with nowhere to go but here, living in dismal conditions. Missionaries Bruce and Paula Hepburn have been serving these people for almost a decade; building homes, teaching them skills, and providing needs similar to “Helping Hands”. When they arrived people were stand-offish of each other and there was a lack of community. Now when neighbors see each other they embrace and share whatever they have with each other. This transformation comes from the Hepburns’ commitment to walk beside these people for so long and share the love and hope Christ has for all of his people. We have an opportunity to partner with them and join in their ministry. Our missional goal is to partner with the local ministry as they serve the people of “The Colonia”.

Helping HAnds

The Helping Hands Food Pantry serves 25+ families per week from the local community or are members or regular attendees of Sunset. Families are provided with a 3- to 5-day supply of groceries.  The Clothing Closet has gently used clothing selections, which vary from week to week. The Clothing Closet is available for all comers.  Clothing sizes range from infant to seniors.  The Helping Hands Pack the Pack backpack program provides weekend food to Beaverton School District students who are experience food insecurity.  The packs are filled with wholesome, family friendly foods. The Community Garden is available for neighbors to rent garden plots for their home use or for distribution via the Helping Hands Food Pantry.

Sunset Presbyterian Church friends and members support Helping Hands by donating financially, through food drives, and by donating gently used clothing and shoes. Financial donations provide funds to purchase food from the Oregon Food Bank.  Retail stores provide weekly food donations (bread, dairy and produce). We are also blessed with some clothing and food drive donations from corporations within our community. Helping Hands is powered by volunteers who desire to follow the example of Christ by serving others.

Jan 27-29, 2017
Trout Creek Bible Camp

After confronting our problems, becoming real with who we are and who God is, how do we move forward? Often it feels like we work really hard to address the problem and once we finally surrender that issue to Christ, there is little focus on what is supposed to happen next. This year is about Christ building us back up. After we’ve gone through the fire, torn down our walls, how do we become more Christ-like and truly take on His character and heart? Now comes the AFTERMATH.

Laugh your Way to a better Marriage

November 4 & 5, 2016 | $35 a person

Mark Gungor is  coming back to Sunset with his hilarious Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage event! Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage isn't your typical weekend marriage event. Over the two-day event, couples will laugh, learn and be able to make real positive changes to their marriage.

Why a “laughter” approach? For one simple reason: to overcome the male objection to a seminar. Let’s be honest, a marriage seminar isn’t the first thing a guy thinks of when he thinks of “a fun way to spend the weekend.” We get that… We also get the importance of working on your marriage to keep it healthy and strong. Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage is designed with an element of humor that appeals to couples, but is especially well-received by men.

It may be hard for you to feel optimistic about the future right now. If you’ve lost a spouse, child, family member, or friend, you’ve probably found there are not many people who understand the deep hurt you feel.

This can be a confusing time when you feel isolated and have many questions about things you’ve never faced before.

“Going to GriefShare feels like having warm arms wrapped around you when you’re shivering.”

GriefShare meet weekly to help you face these challenges and move toward rebuilding your life.

Tuesdays, September 27 - December 13, 6:45pm.

ESL: English for Speakers of other Languages

At Sunset, this is an outreach service for families who need help. Improving English language skills is the gateway to better jobs, housing and education.

We serve adult students learning English and their children. English skills range from absolute beginner to intermediate ability. Most of our students are immigrants in the local area. More than a dozen languages are represented by Sunset ESL students.

Sunset's ESL program helps people meet their immediate, physical needs, this is accomplished by language learning while experiencing Christ’s love and compassion. When students have enough food to eat, a decent home to live in, and a livelihood with means to survive, then they can seek to fulfill their spiritual needs as well.
